The Vultur Project
Archaeologically the Vultur region has been largely neglected. The traditional
approach to the Regione of Northern Basilicata was that the rural nature of the
area lacks substantial archaeological remains, a conclusion disproven by the
mere existence of the Vultur Project. The site itself is the product of a chance
discovery (not unlike many achaeological discoveries) when a farmer's plough
turned up a marble statue of Venus. This armless, headless, statue is now housed
in the Melfi Musuem. This exciting discovery laid the groundwork for a formal
investigation of Torre Degli Embrici.
THE AREA
Experience Italian Culture
Largely thanks to the Fascist infrastructure program of Benito Mussolini, the
towns of Atella and Rionero are accessible by rail. The TrenItalia network will
the primary mode of transportation to and from the project. These trains provide
an excellent gateway to a number of rich cultural and archaeological sites
throughout South Italy. On your days off from the excavation (weekends are free)
you will be able to comfortably travel to Metaponto and Siris (Ancient Greek
colonies), the seaside towns of the Adriatic coast (Bari, Trani, Barletta,
Manfredonia – as well as the inland site of the Battle of Cannae near Canosa),
Pompeii, Herculaneum, Naples, Paestum, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and a whole
host of other gems throughout Italy. On your weekends off you are also welcome
to book a car Rental and explore the countryside at your own convenience.
Should you choose to stay at the dighouse for your days off, you would do
well to investigate options of exploring the Italian culture locally. It
should be noted though that the majority of local Italians will not speak or
understand English. While a language barrier may be present, the locals are
extremely friendly and helpful. Should you be so fortunate to either speak
Italian, or befriend someone who is fluent, you could attend wine tastings,
the annual
music festival in Rionero, or simply explore that which Rionero and
Atella have to offer.
